Here at Oswaldtwistle Short Stay School every student receives Mathematics lessons every day of the week.
We aim to offer them all the opportunity to learn and become competent users of Mathematics in a wider world.
Achieving a qualification in this subject opens up an abundance of pathways that they can follow post 16 from further education to apprenticeships. Students are offered different routes in school to follow dependent on their mathematics ability.
The exams we offer are Entry Level Certificates 1, 2 and 3, Functional Mathematics Levels 1 and 2 and the new GCSE 1 to 9. We follow the Edexcel Examination Board for GCSE maths which links to many of our mainstream feeder schools maths curriculum too.
Students are supported along which ever routes suits them best and encouraged to step up to the next level once the one below is achieved. Our aim is for all students to leave us with at least one qualification in Mathematics.
We offer additional booster and intervention groups or one to one session for student’s to help close the gap if they have missed significant areas of maths.
We also teach maths through other areas of the curriculum, especially via project work in our Key Stage 3 Nurture Group.
Numeracy is a focus in our form tutor time and all staff stress the importance of maths to students in their time with us at Oswaldtwistle.
